Our recording date was March 28,
2004. I arrived with some passionately chosen tunes and a couple
bottles of SOLTERRA wine. In the style of true jazz artists,
Cliff, Nick, and Scott arrived with no pre-planned arrangements.
What transpired is a product of the creative energy we shared together
– energy I hope you will also feel as you listen to this collection of
tunes. I dedicate this CD to my mother – Nancy Studer Rivera (1938-1995), with enormous thanks for the gifts of love, music, and creativity she gave me. Perhaps it was because of her untimely death that I began to pursue my passion for music with more urgency and with a greater commitment to those things that make me feel most alive. Though I’m sorry she can’t celebrate the completion of this recording project with me today, I feel the warmth of her approving smile. I have many musical mentors and supporters to thank for making all of this possible: Bill Canning, Leland Bennett and the band JUBILATION!, Lee Arbetman and the Jazz Barristers, Clif Hardin, Mike Grace, Paul Vornhagen, and especially, the Cliff Monear trio (Cliff Monear, Nick Calandro and Scott Kretzer). Cliff is not only one of the most talented jazz pianists I have had the privilege of working with, but also has graciously shared his skills at engineering this CD. The creative eyes behind this CD cover and insert are those of Paula Christensen (photographer) and Maria Petrenko (graphic artist). What fun they were to work with! Most importantly, I thank Bill and our girls, Michelle and Jenna, for supporting me as I completed this project. The Cliff Monear Trio: Cliff Monear piano Nick Calandro bass Scott Kretzer drums |
